Trauma Informed Care

As educators and support staff we must work from a trauma informed place.

Our first question in behaviour challenges should always be, “Is this child in a place to learn?”

How do we determine this? By knowing the background. By understanding the effects of trauma. By applying Maslow's Hierarchy. By asking ourselves what we would do and how we would respond even as adults if facing a similar crisis or situation. By being knowledgeable of poverty and it's effect on the brain and development.

When the answer is no, it is up to us to create a space that allows that child to feel safe - to belong- and entices his desire to learn.

We must meet him where he is and lead him to where we know he can be.
